A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to die. Recognizing the signs early and acting quickly can significantly improve outcomes and even save lives. That’s where the FAST acronym comes in:
- Face drooping: One side of the face may droop or feel numb. Ask the person to smile to check for asymmetry.
- Arm weakness: Weakness or numbness in one arm can be an early indicator. Ask the person to raise both arms and see if one drifts downward.
- Speech difficulty: Speech may be slurred, or the person may have trouble speaking or understanding.
- Time to call 911: Every second counts. Call emergency services immediately if these symptoms are present.
Strokes can be ischemic (caused by blood clots) or hemorrhagic (caused by bleeding in the brain). Time-sensitive treatments, like clot-busting drugs or surgical interventions, can minimize damage if administered within a few hours.
Reducing your risk includes managing high blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol use. Early awareness can save lives.
