Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, impacts some 21 million adults in the United States. Tinnitus can also cause anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life. Treatment for tinnitus is limited.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been FDA approved for treating depression, but it is also very promising for tinnitus. Tinnitus can be caused by an overactive auditory cortex, causing ringing in the ears. Also, the part of the brain that usually helps tune out/ignore unhelpful sounds actually starts paying even more attention to it. TMS can target both of these issues. It can reduce overactivity of the auditory cortex and enhance the noise-cancelling network within the brain.

From recent studies, 20-50% of patients receiving TMS for tinnitus see improvement. Countryside Neurology offers TMS therapy–if you are interested, please give us a call at 727-712-1567.
