What is pseudobulbar affect?

Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a neurological condition characterized by episodes of uncontrolled, sudden and frequent outbursts of crying and/or laughing that are not appropriate to the individual’s current emotional state. These episodes can occur without a trigger and can be distressing for the individual and those around them. PBA is often seen in individuals with certain neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, ALS, or stroke. Treatment for PBA may include medications and/or therapy.
