Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a life-changing treatment for patients with movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. It offers relief when medications become less effective or cause intolerable side effects.
How It Works
DBS involves implanting thin electrodes into specific areas of the brain. These electrodes deliver electrical impulses that regulate abnormal brain activity, improving motor function. A small device (like a pacemaker) implanted in the chest controls the stimulation.
Conditions Treated with DBS:
-
Parkinson’s Disease (PD)
-
Essential Tremor (ET)
-
Dystonia (in some cases)
Benefits:
-
Reduces tremors, rigidity, and dyskinesias
-
Improves motor function and quality of life
-
Allows for lower medication doses
Who Qualifies?
-
Patients with motor symptoms not well controlled by medication
-
Individuals in good overall health
-
Patients who are not candidates for additional medication therapy
At Countryside Neurology, we guide patients through DBS evaluation, referrals, and post-implantation care. Our team helps identify the best candidates and supports them throughout the journey to improved function and independence.
