What is Electromyogram?
Electromyogram (EMG) is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them (motor neurons). It measures the electrical activity produced by muscle fibers when they contract or are stimulated by a nerve. The test involves inserting fine needles through the skin into the muscle being tested and recording the electrical signals produced by the muscle. The results of an EMG can help diagnose conditions such as muscle diseases, nerve damage, and nerve-muscle disorders such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and myasthenia gravis. It can also help determine the cause of muscle weakness and assist in developing a treatment plan.
